Surbiton Ladies suffered heartbreak in the EuroHockey Club Cup, losing 2-0 to Spaniards, Club Campo De Madrid at the quarter-final stage at Sugden Road on Thursday evening.
Surbiton’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals for the second season running suffered a setback in the tenth minute when Lucia Abajo Saenz De Tejada’s stunning volley finish gave Club Campo the lead in front of a massive crowd.
Club Campo still led 1-0 at half time, but Surbiton had two chances of getting back in the match, Giselle Ansley forcing a save from Madrid goalkeeper, Maria Ruiz Castillo within 30 seconds of the start of the third quarter, from Surbiton’s first penalty corner, then a second award four minutes later agonisingly evaded Jo Hunter.
Club Campo sealed the win with two minutes to play, Rebecca Grote converting a penalty corner just inside the right post past Surbiton goalkeeper, Abi Walker. Begoña Garcia received a yellow card in the final minute, but Surbiton had to settle for battling for fifth to eighth place, starting with a match against Victorya Smolevichi of Belarus at 7 pm on Friday (18 May).
